Hopscotch Theatre Company is a limited company with charitable status. Our aim is to bring accessible and entertaining theatre performances and drama workshops to primary school children throughout Scotland, and to encourage and nurture an appreciation of Scottish culture and the performing arts from an early age.
The company was established in 1988 and since then has produced more than seventy separate Scottish and Irish tours. Hopscotch Theatre normally tour four theatre productions a year, three of which are based on some aspect of Scottish culture or history and one which is a Christmas pantomime. Our productions are multi-levelled and offer something for every age group – including the teachers! Our performances and teacher resources are created around the Curriculum For Excellence outcomes.
Our Scots cultural tours run for approximately twelve weeks each, reaching around 30,000 school children per production. The Hopscotch pantomimes are enjoyed by nearly 40,000 school children each year! Hopscotch can claim to be the hardest working and most experienced theatre company working with Scotland’s primary schools today.

We pride ourselves on being ‘school friendly’ by making our productions available to schools with smaller school rolls and limited budgets and there is no hard sell and no obligation to re-book. Our Scottish based actors are chosen for their excellence as performers and not as salespersons. We are ‘curriculum friendly’ canvassing feedback from every school we perform in and acting on that feedback to make our productions fulfill demand from schools and the CFE. Our specially commisioned original scripts and songs come from Scottish based writers. We are ‘audience and pupil friendly’ in that we limit our audience sizes so that each pupil experiences the very best of our performances, no one is stuck at the back unable to see and hear properly.
