‘When The Oil Ran Out’ 2012

“Best show that I have seen!”  P6 Teacher, Whitehills PS, Angus, February 2012

We toured this very funny yet educational show in early 2007 when your P7 were in P2.  We feel the issues raised are just as relevant today – if not more so.

Don’t let your creative teaching oil run out!
Use this show to support inspirational teaching and learning in your classroom!

Life as we know it is about to change…

Based on our hugely successful 2007 touring production “What We Did When The Oil Ran Out!” Re-written and updated for 2012.

“Excellent message & lots of fun.”  P3 Teacher, HS of Dundee, March 2012

‘When the Oil Ran Out’ follows the fate of surly school kid Kevin, who just wants to play his computer games and get lifts everywhere from his frazzled Mum. But when the oil reserves run out, his cosy world is turned upside down and he embarks on a funny yet informative adventure, learning about all the energy sources we use like Fossil Fuels & Nuclear Power and what could happen to our planet in the future.

Curriculum for Excellence Links & Learning

If your class see this show it can act as a springboard for exploring numerous curriculum areas and provide a starting point for meeting several experiences and outcomes.

The themes of the performance primarily advocate for a more environmentally friendly way of approaching our lives and in discussion, research and exploration post- performance your class could meet the following experiences and outcomes;

Social Studies

  • I can consider ways of looking after my school or community and can encourage others to care for their environment. SOC 1-08a

  • I can investigate the use and development of renewable and sustainable energy to gain an awareness of their growing importance in Scotland or beyond. TCH 2-02b

Expressive Arts

With the creative planning of some active learning ideas your class could explore themes from the show through all the expressive arts curriculum areas.

  • Drawing and creating 3D models as seen in the show
  • Inventing dance using ideas from the show
  • Learning songs from the production in advance.  Writing their own songs inspired by the show and playing out some of the story in a dramatic re – telling.
  • Simply watching the show meets listening targets and the talking and pupil- led discussion, post show could lead into whole school Eco – projects as identified by your pupils.

Eco Workshop

To complement this performance a highly interactive workshop exploring the issues of sustainability, conservation and climate change.  Active learning will be encouraged through children’s
questioning and interaction, using drama conventions such as hot seating, thought tracking and conscience alley and by creating scenarios using freeze frame and other drama techniques.
