For 33 years, we’ve performed to thousands of school pupils across Scotland with our annual pantomime. However, due to the ongoing restrictions surrounding COVID-19, it’s meant many theatres have had to cancel or postpone a trip to the theatre. Even visiting theatre companies like ourself aren’t able to visit Scottish schools this season.
So that’s why in response, we’ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes to find a solution. And thanks to support through the Scottish Government’s Adapt and Thrive Fund, we have been able to create a new online and interactive pantomime “Puss N’ Boots”.
Keeping our audiences safe this year was our top priority and so we thought what better way to do that than by bringing it directly to classrooms via a live stream.
It’s been a challenging 18 months for us but we’ve learned a lot too. We teamed up with The Space’s Digital Mentorship programme to give us some top tips to go digital and now we’re thrilled to be back with pantomime and work with a wonderful cast and crew. Including a brand-new commission from the talented Zoë Bullock (stay tuned for our next blog piece all about this marvellous team!).
We’ve been determined to find a way to continue to deliver the pantomime spirit to schools and families across Scotland. Throughout the pandemic we’ve been thinking up new ways to interact with schools and communities they would normally visit in person. Teachers, carers and parents will be given the opportunity to get up close and behind the scenes in this new method of delivery, and most of all in the safety of their own bubbles. All whilst harnessing the tradition of pantomime and some Scottish twists that audiences have come to expect with Hopscotch Theatre Company.
We’re delighted that ‘Puss n’ Boots’ has all the hallmarks of a traditional pantomime experience whilst including contemporary themes for young audiences such as protecting our environment and we hope it will spread cheer and a message of hope, especially in the light of Glasgow’s COP 26. And all delivered in the safety of school bubbles of course! How eco-efficient is that
